passing was not a solitary act. It required other people who were willing to keep your secret, and a community that was willing to let you go and look the other way, even when it hurt.

Usually I’m a bit skeptical when mainstream media “discovers” an age-old phenomenon like passing, but this book review comes from Team Codeswitch, whose mandate I support, plus I too have always been fascinated by the performance of passing.
